Respiratory Illnesses
Respiratory viruses commonly cause illness such as flu, COVID-10, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). There are actions you can take to protect yourself and others. Learn how to reduce your risk of getting sick and what to do if you already aren't feeling well.
Tricks to Avoid Getting Sick
Healthy Behaviors
- Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap.
- Sleep enough. For most adults, that's about eight hours per night. Sleeping fully at night is more effective than taking naps.
- Hydrate. Drink water throughout the day.
- Eat a variety of nourishing foods.
- Move your body in ways that you enjoy.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Communicating with Instructors
Communicate with your instructors when you will be unable to attend class. Most instructors are providing instructional options for students who need to miss class. You do not have to disclose your personal health information.
UNC-Chapel Hill has a University Approved Absence policy; viral illnesses like COVID-19 generally do not qualify unless the illness is significant and lasts longer than 5 consecutive days. For situations when class absence is not approved such as illnesses like COVID-19, instructors are encouraged to work directly with students to determine the best approach to missed classes and make-up assignments.
