Promoting Safety: Violence Prevention and Support

Stalking is a serious issue that can affect anyone, regardless of relationship status. At UNC-Chapel Hill, we are committed to raising awareness about stalking, promoting prevention efforts, and highlighting the resources and support available to members of our campus community who may be affected.

Understanding what stalking looks like is an important step in recognizing and responding to it. Learn more about how stalking is defined at Carolina.

Preventing and Responding to Violence

We all can help prevent and respond to violence.

Trainings: Consider signing up for a training to help you respond to disclosures and be an empowered bystander when you notice inappropriate or violent behavior.

  • Request an outreach presentation for your organization from Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services (VPAS) on bystander intervention, healthy relationships, consent, supporting individuals impacted by gender-based violence and harassment, campus resources and options for support and reporting, and how to build trauma-informed spaces on our campus.
  • Empower UNC: Responding to Disclosures of GBV (gender-based violence) equips students and employees with information, resources, and strategies to respond to disclosures of sexual violence, interpersonal violence, stalking, and sexual and gender-based harassment in an informed and compassionate way.

Supportive Response: When someone shares a concerning experience with you, listen genuinely and validate their feelings. Knowing about available resources can empower you to offer information and help connect them with support.

  • Gender Violence Service Coordinators provide space for individuals to discuss experiences and impact of violence and harassment. They also support individuals who may be indirectly impacted by gender-based violence and harassment
  • Additional campus resources, like the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office and UNC Police, also offer options for safety planning, reporting, and other supportive measures.
  • Safe at UNC offers more information about support and services and reporting options.
