Dimensions of Wellness

Career

Career Wellness involves the level of satisfaction and fulfillment you experience along your educational and career path. Engaging in work that provides meaning and purpose consistent with your lifestyle is key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Physical

Physical Wellness is maintaining good physical habits such as nutrition and exercise to build a healthy body. Engaging in regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep, managing chronic conditions, and avoiding harmful behaviors (i.e. tobacco, drugs, alcohol, etc.) are essential in allowing you to perform daily activities without physical stress. Always remember to listen to your body!

Emotional

Emotional Wellness is the ability to understand, manage, and express your feelings in healthy ways. It can help you adjust to emotional challenges, cope with stress, and build healthy relationships with others. Understanding one’s self and learning how to manage our emotional reactions to stress is critical in attaining emotional well-being. Practicing self-compassion will help build one’s emotional intelligence to lead a more fulfilling life.

Spiritual

Spiritual Wellness is the sense of connection to something greater than yourself, giving your life meaning, purpose, and balance. It allows for greater connection with your actions, beliefs, and values, as well as fostering an appreciation for the natural forces around you. It cultivates reflection, mindfulness, and inner peace. Consider engaging in practices such as meditation or spending time in nature!

Environmental

Environmental Wellness involves understanding the relationship between humans and the environment. Our health can be impacted by our social, built, and natural environments. It is critical that our micro-environment (home, work, or school settings) and macro-environment (community, country, and planet) make strides to improve their surroundings and protect the individuals within them. Remember to make sustainable choices and spend time in nature!

Intellectual

Intellectual Wellness revolves around the pursuit of knowledge, creativity, and mental stimulation. Whether it is an effort to learn new things or prior knowledge being shared, this type of wellbeing boosts awareness of the world around you. Engage your mind and seek out new challenges to promote lifelong learning.

Social

Social Wellness involves one’s relationships with friends, family, and the community. It is the ability to interact and connect with effective communication that can foster supportive relationships. Building a network and spending time with people you enjoy instills a sense of belonging and compassion.

Financial

Financial Wellness involves the ability to manage your money effectively and make informed decisions that support your short and long-term financial goals. Knowledge regarding personal finances including budgeting, saving, and debt management can help you be prepared for both expected and unexpected expenses.

Positive Self-Talk
Being aware of negative self-talk and using thought stopping or reframing can establish more positive self-talk. For example, the phrase, “There is no way it will work,” can be replaced with a positive statement such as, “I am trying my best to make it work.”

Remember to Breathe
Remember to Breathe
By consciously slowing your breathing, you can better focus on taking deep full breaths. Allow yourself to feel in the present moment and notice where your breath is coming from. You may choose to shut your eyes or sit, but taking a minute to breathe will lessen your focus on stressors in your life.
