Referral Coordination Services

Getting help for mental health services can be challenging. Some students struggle with stigma. Others worry about time or financial constraints. We understand that it takes courage to come to CAPS. Our goal is to help you access the services that will be the most helpful to you.

Referral Coordinators will:

  • Answer questions about therapy, help you develop appropriate goals for therapy, and talk through ambivalence you may have about taking the next steps.
  • Provide you with a list of therapists targeted to your concerns and preferences.
  • Help you sort through information about insurance, and problem solve about any obstacles that may arise.
  • Provide continued support until you connect with a provide or resource you feel comfortable with.

During your first visit to CAPS, you and the therapist can determine if Referral Coordination will be helpful to you. Additionally, the front desk staff can help you schedule with a Referral Coordinator after your first visit if you would like assistance connecting with a community provider.

To schedule an appointment, call (919) 966-3658. Students may also request referrals via email by emailing the CAPS referral coordinators at CAPSreferrals@unc.edu. Please include your insurance and any preferences you have for a provider. Emails will be responded to within one week. For more immediate assistance, please walk-in between 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday or Friday between 9:30 a.m. and noon or 1:00p.m - 4:00 pm.
