CHS provides yellow fever vaccines to community
June 7, 2017

Campus Health Services has been designated as a site to distribute vaccines for Yellow Fever to any community member 18 years or older. Details for how to do this are below.

Yellow Fever Vaccine FAQs

Why is it so hard to find yellow fever vaccine?

Yellow fever vaccines are difficult to acquire due to the halt in production by the manufacturer of YF-VAX®, the only yellow fever vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), YF-VAX® is not expected to be available until at least summer 2018.

Is an alternative to YF-VAX® available?

Another version of yellow fever vaccine, Stamaril®, is being made available in the United States under investigational use. Stamaril® is made by the same company that makes YF-VAX®.  Over 400 million doses of Stamaril® have been administered in over 70 countries over the past 30 years.

Where can I find Stamaril®  vaccine?

The manufacturer of Stamaril®  and the Centers for Disease Control selected a limited number of sites within the United States to administer Stamaril®. Campus Health Services is one of these sites. You can find other sites that administer Stamaril®  at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/search-for-stamaril-clinics

Who can receive Stamaril® ® at Campus Health Services?

Campus Health Services will administer Stamaril® to those persons age 18 and up who meet the investigational protocol criteria. You do not have to be a student at UNC-Chapel Hill in order to receive Stamaril®  from Campus Health Services.

How much does Stamaril®  cost?

Campus Health Services will submit the charge for the Stamaril® vaccine and injection to your insurance. Campus Health Services is in-network with most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, and United.   Your insurance may not cover the cost of Stamaril®. You will be responsible for any charges not covered by your insurance company.  The charge for Stamaril®, including the vaccination injection fee, is $162.

How do I make an appointment to receive Stamaril® at Campus Health Services?

If you are a student or post-doc at UNC Chapel Hill, please make an appointment with our International Travel Clinic.

If you are not a student or post doc at UNC Chapel Hill, please submit a completed Yellow Fever Vaccine Questionnaire. This questionnaire helps us determine if you meet the criteria for the investigational drug protocol. You may submit this questionnaire via fax, in person at Campus Health Services, 2nd floor Administration West, or via email to chstravel@unc.edu.   You will indicate on this form your preferred time slots for an appointment. A travel health provider will review the questionnaire and contact you regarding whether you are eligible to receive the vaccine, and you will receive an appointment time.

How do I know if I am eligible to receive Stamaril® ?

Patients must meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the investigational drug protocol.

Has the UNC Institutional Review Board approved this investigational drug study?

Yes.  If there are questions or concerns about your rights as a participant in this study, or if you would like to obtain information or offer input, please contact the Institutional Review Board at 919-966-3113 or by email to IRB_subjects@unc.edu.

What will happen when I come in for an appointment?

When you arrive for your appointment, first come to the Campus Health Pharmacy in the basement of Campus Health Services. A travel pharmacist will discuss the Stamaril® consent form with you, and you will sign the form.  The consent form will be sent to you when it is determined that you are eligible to receive Stamaril®, so that you have time to review it before your appointment. The pharmacist will also review the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study with you.

After meeting with the travel pharmacist, you will go to the Immunization Clinic on the first floor of Campus Health Services. The immunization nurse will administer Stamaril® . You will need to stay for observation for 15 minutes after receiving Stamaril®, per the study protocol.

How will I park at Campus Health Services?

A parking permit and map will be sent to you when we send you the time and date for your immunization appointment.

Will Campus Health Services provide my other travel medications and vaccines?
