RA Health Programming Guide-Fitness

Learning Objectives:
At
the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand
the value of fitness
- Identify a safe, effective fitness regimen
- Schedule
exercise into busy schedules
Materials:
Laptop/projector,
chosen activity materials
Preparation:
Familiarize
yourself with the subject of fitness by looking through the informational
PowerPoint presentation.
Consider motivation. It’s
possible that many undergraduates who are interested in exercise might be
concerned about weight loss or appearance rather than health. When you’re
talking with residents about exercise, emphasize that a balanced, reasonable
workout plan impacts a person’s health. Excessively or obsessively
exercising can be a sign of an eating disorder and/or body image issues. Conversations
about a healthy body image is important; be sure to embrace all sizes and
not idealize a single body type. You might consider combining the body image presentation from the Nutrition module with your Fitness program.
Workshop:
There
are two PowerPoint presentations available for this topic. One is informational
and includes basic facts on fitness as well as exercise tips and campus
resources. This presentation is about 10-15 mins long. The second is a
short presentation on nutrition and fitness that serves as an introduction to a
Jeopardy-style game on those topics called Food and Fitness for the Win.
This presentation and activity together take about 60 mins, and there is
a handout to go with them. There are additional activities that are available
to encourage student participation and group fitness. They last anywhere between 30 mins to 2 hrs. Feel free to pick and choose which activities would work best for your program. Also, don't forget to check out the Fitness Resources page for more fitness-friendly ideas and places!
