RA Health Programming Guide-Cultural Competency

Printer-friendly version

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1) Develop a sense of self-awareness and an understanding of privilege

2) Gain a better understanding of how people experience discrimination or prejudice and how these experiences affect their daily lives

Materials:

Chosen activity materials, pens and pencils

Preparation:

It is strongly recommended that you go through the Facilitating Effective Diversity Workshops resource before you start any program. We anticipate that planning a program on cultural competency will be a learning experience for you as well as your participants. You don’t have to have all of the right answers. You should also prepare by printing out the relevant handouts for your chosen activity.

Workshop:

This workshop is based on facilitating a dialogue and will not include any type of PowerPoint. Diveristy and cultural competency can be a very sensitive issue for many people. Make sure you establish a safe space for people to discuss their thoughts and feelings without fear of being ridiculed. Depending on the activities that you choose, this program could go from 60 mins to several hours (the Movie Club activity length is dependent on how long the movie is).

Encourage participants to be honest with themselves and each other. Remind participants that taking the time to attend workshops and educate themselves about issues of discrimination and prejudice is the first step to creating a more accepting community. Because this is such a sensitive topic, feel free to contact Wellness to set up a meeting to talk to a professional staff member who could give you suggestions for facilitating this program. Also, feel free to look through the Cultural Competency Resources page for more ideas and information regarding this topic.
