Programming Guide - Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)

Talking about alcohol and other drug use is important
year-round, but consider doing a workshop on AOD in the fall before football
season starts or during October in preparation for Halloween.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course, participants
will be able to:
- Understand
the presence of drinking at UNC
- Understand
the reasons people do or do not choose to drink
- Understand
BAC and what is considered a standard drink
Materials:
Laptop/projector, easel with notepad, markers, BAC and
“Know What’s In Your Cup” cards, chosen activity materials
Preparation:
Remove student athlete or Greek life slides from the
PowerPoint if they are not pertinent to your audience. Gather relevant activity
materials and pick up the BAC and “Know What’s In Your Cup” cards from Wellness (email us and we'll have them for you at the CAPS front desk on the third floor of Campus Health Services during our office hours).
Workshop:
This presentation, which includes some room
for discussion throughout should take about 20 minutes. The final two slides on
student athletes and Greek life should be included or removed depending on time
constraints and the intended student audience. With an activity or two, the
workshop should last approximately 60
minutes. Alternatively, you could use the two discussion-based brainstorm
activities below in addition to another activity or game instead of using the PowerPoint. Don't forget to look at the AOD Resources page for more info!
Note: Keep your
audience in mind. If you are working primarily with first year students
(who
are mostly underage), keep the information about alcohol and other drugs
focused on reducing risk in general, and always include information for
folks who don't drink or use drugs.
If your audience includes more second or third year students, you can
incorporate more discussion about risk reduction strategies specific to
their (or their friends') use.
