CWS provides individual counseling, couples counseling, medication evaluations and medication management, and groups and workshops, as well as education and health promotion in the areas of nutrition, alcohol and substance use, massage and stress management, sexual behavior, and outreach and events. Individual Counseling Your initial appointment will be spent exploring your current problems and needs, and determining how we can be of help to you. At this first visit, a plan to address your concerns will be suggested. This plan might include: - Brief, focused therapy at CWS
- Follow up visits to address an acute stress
- Participation in a group or workshop at CWS
- Evaluation for medication, if desired
- Referral to other services on campus or off campus
Groups and Workshops Participating in a group therapy is a powerful mode for growth and change. Students in groups give each other significant understanding, support, and encouragement in facing similar issues. They also gain different and valuable perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints on those issues. Couples Counseling
When the focus of concern is a relationship issue or decision and both partners are motivated to address this, couples therapy may be an efficient way to proceed. CWS can provide brief or time limited couples therapy. Medication Management Services
Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) provides extended medication management services to UNC students who have paid their student health fee. CWS has increased its psychiatry staff in order to provide medication evaluation and management to as many students as possible without referring them to outside providers. This is a clear advantage to students who can now receive their psychiatric service in one facility.
Human Sexuality Services
Counseling and Wellness Services provides Sexual Health Education services and HIV testing through the Carolina Health Education Counselors for Sexuality (CHECS) Clinic. CHECS clinic services are available to UNC students, and include HIV testing, individual consultation, small group programs by request, and campus wide programs throughout the year.
