For Faculty
When you are concerned about a student and would like to consult with a Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) therapist about the student, there are several ways to have access to CWS services.
  • Pick up the phone and call the CWS Triage Team for advice - 966-3658. There are CWS therapists on-call daily to take referrals from students or faculty and staff, or to offer consultation to a faculty member who is concerned about a student.
  • Invite the student to accompany you to CWS and walk over to the office with them. CWS therapists on the Triage Team are available daily to meet with students for same day assistance.
  • If appropriate, have the student call from your office and speak with the CWS Triage Team. The CWS therapist may invite the student to come over to CWS the same day.
  • Encourage the student to visit CWS.  Eligible individuals can walk in to our service between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  CWS therapists are available though between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm M-F for urgent, crisis oriented concerns.
  • The CWS office hours are: 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Call us at 919-966-3658. After Hours and on weekends, please call 919-966-2281 for urgent needs.

Consultations

Any problem that you observe in a student that is causing concern and which seems to interfere with the student's activities, thoughts, or feelings is appropriate to consult about.  You may or may not choose to disclose the student's identity to the CWS therapist.  If there is concern about  self harm please refer to our Suicide Prevention page.

Confidentiality
Any information that is discussed with a CWS therapist is treated confidentially and does not become part of  the student's academic records. No information can be released to anyone without the student's written consent unless there is significant concern about harm to self or others. CWS will not disclose the identity of a student who receives services without the student's written consent.

Crisis Intervention

Same day crisis intervention is available through CWS' Triage Teams to help students manage acute personal crises and provide them with the skills to function and meet the demands of a campus environment.

Read the suggestions on ways to help on the Helping a Distressed Student and Suicide Prevention web page, and understand what a first visit to CWS may be like - A First Visit.

CWS Location
CWS is located on the third floor of Campus Health Services (CHS) in the James A. Taylor building, which is between the Kenan Football Stadium and UNC Hospitals.

FYI: The Employee Assistance Program
Faculty and staff are not eligible for CWS services, but faculty and staff may receive similar services through the Employee Assistance Program offered through Employee Services, a service from UNC-Chapel Hill's Human Resources department. The professional counselor may be reached confidentially at 929-2362 locally, or 1-800-543-7327 from Raleigh. Faculty and staff have benefited from their contact with the Employee Assistance Program.
