Eligibility for Student Insurance Plans

Eligibility for the various UNC-Chapel Hill Health Insurance Plans are based File 1720on your UNC affiliation, e.g. student, RA/TA or Postdoc.  Eligible students are covered by the Hard Waiver (Mandatory) Plan. Spouses, Domestic Partners and Dependents of students are eligible to enroll in the Voluntary Plan.

Benefits for the UNC System Student Health Insurance Plan (Hard Waiver and Voluntary Plans) are available at Blue Cross Blue Shield Student Blue.  

UNC System Student Health Insurance Hard Waiver (Mandatory) Plan Eligibility Criteria

All students enrolled in UNC System Colleges and Universities, including UNC-Chapel Hill, who meet the following 3 criteria, are eligible for the UNC System Student Insurance Hard Waiver Plan (Mandatory Plan) and are required to have health insurance as of Fall Semester 2010. Listed below are the eligibility criteria:

  • Eligible to Pay the Campus Health Fee (Student Health Fee) AND

  • Undergraduate student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours or Graduate student enrolled in a minimum of 1 credit hour AND
  • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program 

UNC System Student Health Insurance Voluntary (Base) Plan Eligibility Criteria 

  • Eligible to Pay the Campus Health Fee (Student Health Fee) AND
  • Undergraduate student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours or Graduate student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours OR
  • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program  

Distance Education Students Eligibility Requirements for the Voluntary Plan

Distance Education students are only eligible for the voluntary plan and should go to the Student Blue webpage for Voluntary enrollment to enroll and pay BCBS directly. Students must be:

  • Undergrad taking 6 credit hours; Grad taking 1 credit hour AND
  • Enrolled in a degree seeking program AND
  • Reside in the state of North Carolina

Since Distance Education students do not meet the Hard Waiver criteria above, they are not required to waive out of UNC System Mandatory plan.

Those students NOT eligible for the UNC System Student Hard Waiver Plan or Voluntary Plan: 

  • RA/TA students covered under the Student Blue Health Insurance Plan
  • PostDocs
  • Part-Time students (students who do not meet the credit hour requirement or do not have the Campus Health Fee calculated with their tuition)
  • Most certificate program attendees

UNC-Chapel Hill  State Employees

Employees of the University will have the Student Health Insurance Fee added to their student tuition account automatically unless they waive out of the Student Blue Mandatory plan by going to the BCBS website each semester. 

UNC-Chapel Hill RA/TA Medical Health Insurance Plan  

Eligible students are enrolled by individual academic departments in the RA/TA Student Blue Health Insurance Plan (GSHIP). Most charges not covered by the Campus Health Fee are covered by the RA/TA Health Insurance Plan and claims are billed directly to BCBS by Campus Health Services.

Charges incurred at Campus Health Services not covered by the RA/TA Insurance Plan are the responsibility of the student and are transferred to the student’s account at the Office of Student Accounts and University Receivables in the Student and Academic Services Building (SASB) North. To enroll a Spouse, Domestic Partner or Dependent you will need:

  • Social Security Number
  • Prior insurance information (insurer, policy number and dates of coverage
  • An application – Just download the electronic application off the website 

UNC-Chapel Hill  PostDoc Medical Health Insurance Plan  

Eligible students are enrolled by individual academic departments in the PostDoc Student Blue Health Insurance Plan (GSHIP). Most charges not covered by the Campus Health Fee are covered by the PostDoc Student Blue Plan and claims are billed directly to BCBS by Campus Health Services.

Charges incurred at Campus Health Services not covered by the PostDoc Student Blue Plan are the responsibility of the PostDoc and an invoice is mailed to the PostDoc's address on record.
