UNC Counseling and Psychological Services is a combined prevention and treatment service, addressing the needs of students, postdoctoral fellows and spouses - a population of over 28,000. Our multi-disciplinary staff is composed of nine psychologists, four psychiatrists, five social workers and four administrative support staff. We are part of the Campus Health Service which is administratively located within Student Affairs. We offer a wide array of clinical and preventative services in order to meet the needs of students with a variety of difficulties ranging from academic stress or adjustment difficulties to more severe pathology. Students most commonly present to our counseling service for assistance with depression, anxiety, academic concerns and/or relationship difficulties.

Students enter our service via a walk-in triage system. Immediate crisis intervention is provided, if a student’s needs are emergent. Alternatively, students can be referred to any of our in-house referral options including:

  • brief individual therapy;
  • group therapy;
  • case management;
  • medication evaluation;
  • or assessment for an academic intervention.
  • Students are referred to the community when they would best be treated by more ongoing therapy or if their needs are outside our scope of services.

In addition to our clinical services CAPS also engages in a number of exciting clinical and prevention initiatives. Students are encouraged to use wellness services including sexual education, alcohol assessments and nutrition consultations. Furthermore, Interactive Theatre Carolina is an outreach program which uses theatre to promote awareness and dialogue around issues of social justice and wellness.

CAPS staff routinely consult with medical providers in Campus Health Services. Additionally, CAPS staff collaborate with other campus departments and programs including: the Covenant Scholars; Office of International Students and Scholars; Academic Advising and the LGBTQ Center.
