Printer-friendly version

Follow these steps:

  1.  Meet with an advisor in your department, college, or program.
    • Discuss the academic difficulty and explore your academic options with an advisor in your college. The deans in each college oversee the academic appeals process. Contact your department for specific information on how to file an appeal for a course load reduction during the current semester.
    • Department Contact Information
  2. Pick up the petition in your department
    • Your advisor will provide the appropriate forms for the petition.
  3. If you are in treatment at CAPS, or were in treatment at CAPS sometime during the semester pertaining to your petition, ask your CAPS therapist (either by phone -919-966-3658, or email if you are comfortable communicating with your CAPS provider in this way) to complete the CAPS portion (page 4) of the petition, and submit it to Advising.
  4. If you are in treatment with a provider somewhere other than CAPS, or were in treatment with a non-CAPS provider at sometime during the semester  pertaining to your petition, have that provider submit documentation of your diagnosis, dates of treatment, and his or her opinion regarding the degree of academic impairment caused by the disorder directly to Advising.  You do not need an additional evaluation at CAPS.

More information on petitioning for late drops (course drops after the 8th week of the semester) and underloads (taking less than 12 credit hours per semester) is available at: http://advising.unc.edu/AcademicPoliciesProcedures#petitioning-for-late-drops
